Churchill Lofts
A History

The Churchill Drug Company was a critical economic mover and shaker in Burlington throughout the early 20th century. The company expanded beyond Burlington into Cedar Rapids and Peoria. The Churchill Lofts was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.

CHURCHILL DRUG COMPANY INCORPORATES

F.E Churchill, C.P Squires, F.S Churchill, and A.T Churchill incorporate the Churchill Drug Company.

1907

CHURCHILL DRUG COMPANY TAKES OVER LOTS ON 4TH AND VALLEY

Churchill Drug Company works with architect Harry Irvin Goddard to develop the Churchill building on 4th and Valley.

1928

CHURCHILL DRUG COMPANY MERGES WITH MCKESSON & ROBBINS

The Churchill Drug Company continues to expand until it merges with McKesson & Robbins. They form one of the largest Wholesale drug firms in the U.S.

1976

MCKESSON & ROBBINS SELLS THE PROPERTY TO BURLINGTON TRADING COMPANY

McKesson & Robbins shifts their wholesale business to Rock Island and Cedar Rapids and sell the building to Burlington Trading Company.

2004

MISTER MOTOS OPENS INSIDE CHURCHILL

Kevin Bangert purchases the building and opens Mister Motos, a popular and iconic bar and restaurant in downtown Burlington. The bar shuts down in 2017.

The origins of the Churchill Drug Company plays a significant role in the development of Burlington as an economic hub in the decades that followed its closure. The architecture of the building is an excellent example of 20th century commercial design reflecting Renaissance and Craftsman elements.

2023

Y&J PROPERTIES RE-DEVELOPS BUILDING FOR MULTI-FAMILY USE

Y&J Properties re-develops the Churchill building and opens in 2023. The Churchill Lofts boasts 48 loft residential apartments and 5 first floor commercial units. Many apartments and common areas retain artifacts from the original drug wholesaling business.
